Update on New Antiepileptic Drugs in Children

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) have applications beyond epilepsy and have proven to be valuable additions to psychopharmacology in the treatment of Psychiatric disorders in adults and children. Moreover, widespread experience by healthcare practitioners with these medications has translated into a better understanding of their short- and long-term safety and tolerability However. optimal results with AEDs in the treatment of psychiatric disorders require knowledge of appropriate dosing regimens, age-specific tolerability, and pharmacokinetics. This review addresses these characteristics for each of the new generation AEDs and places a special emphasis on dosing, adverse effects, and pharmacokinetic features that are unique or important in the pediatric population.
