Resumen

The world’s understanding of substance use and misuse has historically been a dynamic process. From moralism to medicalization, several social sciences and medical sciences have helped to mould our understanding, while also providing a basis for conceptualizations of recovery and remission. In the twenty-first century, substance use disorder recovery hallmarks include recovery-oriented systems of care, multiple and diverse pathways of recovery, and community-based recovery supports. While definitions of recovery have varied, and consensus has not yet been achieved, the commonalities suggest the process is self-directed and assists individuals to find meaning and purpose. As the science of recovery continues to advance, our understanding of substance use disorder and recovery will continue to expand and deepen, leading to more equitable and efficacious systems, services, and policies.
