Resumen
Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease of bacterial etiology. It is characterized by dysbiosis of the oral microbiome that is linked to chronic unresolved inflammation and destruction of the periodontal tissues. Recent studies suggest that the uncontrolled inflammation and tissue destruction associated with periodontitis is due to a failure of endogenous resolution of inflammation pathways. In this review, pro-resolution mediators and resolution of inflammation pathways will be discussed in the context of tissue homeostasis. In addition, emerging therapies using resolvins for the successful management of inflammatory ailments and as a treatment paradigm for periodontal disease will be emphasized. Pro-resolution mediators, such as resolvins, hold great promise in the treatment of periodontitis, including periodontal tissue regeneration.
