Resumen

The ability to perform operative vaginal delivery distinguishes the obstetrician from other obstetric practitioners. The ability to perform this procedure contributes to safe prevention of cesarean deliveries. Current information about the maternal and fetal risks and benefits is reviewed. This chapter includes updated information about the history of forceps, counseling about the risks and benefits of second-stage cesarean vs. operative vaginal delivery, and updated information about the role of simulation in operative vaginal delivery. The goal is to promote informed and person-centered decision making and best practices for training.
