Resumen

The antioxidative properties of melatonin, structurally-related indoles and the chain-breaking antioxidants ascorbate, trolox and glutathione were investigated using the radical trapping reagent ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenz-thiazoline-6-sulphonic acid). The indole compounds and the phenolic or thiolic antioxidants acted synergistically suppressing the formation of the ABTS cation radical ABTS(*)+ completely when coincubated. Electron-donating indole compounds such as melatonin and chain-breaking antioxidants such as ascorbate can act in concert to provide potent antioxidative protection.
