N2 - Intraabdominal bacterial infections (secondary peritonitis and intraabdominal abscesses) involve a large number of aerobic and anaerobic organisms and require a multifactorial therapeutic approach that consists of general supportive measures, surgical intervention, and antibiotic treatment. In spite of advances in antibiotic therapy, morbidity and mortality remain high. Well‐conducted studies using standardized classification of infections are necessary to determine the best antibiotic regimen, and to lower morbidity and mortality. 1991 Pharmacotherapy Publications Inc.
