Resumen
We review the pathogenesis of the most common diabetic conditions: 1) non-insulin-dependent (Type ii, maturity-onset) diabetes mellitus; 2) insulin-dependent (Type I, juvenile-onset) diabetes mellitus; and 3) diabetic ketoacidosis. Particular emphasis will be placed on the contribution of insulin resistance to the glucose intolerance observed in these three states. Both the site and mechanism(s) of the glucose intolerance will be discussed.
