Resumen

The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate a clear understanding of the complex function of the hip, and the role each structure plays as it relates to pathology. The layer concept is an approach to hip anatomy that was developed by Dr. Byran Kelly to explain which structures of the hip are the origin of specific pathology, identify the pain generators, and apply thoughtful management recommendations (Draovitch et al., Curr Rev Musculoskelet Med 5:1–8, 2012). The four layers to be discussed in this chapter are the osseous layer (Layer 1), the inert layer (Layer 2), the contractile layer (Layer 3), and the neuromechanical layer (Layer 4).
