Resumen
The present study evaluates the blue-green alga Spirulina as the sole dietary source of protein in sexually maturing male rats. A diet containing Spirulina protein was compared to diets containing no protein, protein in the form of sodium caseinate, and protein in cereal base commercially produced food specifically designed for the laboratory rat. Spirulina as the sole protein source proved adequate to support normal growth and sexual maturation. This conclusion was based on body weights, organ weights, testicular histology, hematological data and on the levels of the gonadotrophic hormones, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone and prolactin. The protein efficiency ratios show Spirulina to be of comparatively good protein quality. Thus, Spirulina shows promise as a protein-rich food source.
