Antidepressant drugs

This review covers the efficacy, side effects, and toxicity of various classes of antidepressants: tricyclics (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and second generation antidepressants including the selective inhibitors of serotonin reuptake (SSRIs). Also reviewed are newer drugs such as moclobemide, a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (RIMA), and venlafaxine, a drug that inhibits the uptake of both norepinephrine and serotonin (similar in this respect to a number of the TCAs) but has a side‐effect profile more like that of the SSRIs.
