Resumen

Acute ischemic stroke presents with various neurological manifestations that necessitate different emergent care pathways. Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke are being utilized more widely as a result of public awareness and expansion of clinical services with tele-stroke. Large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke is being treated more expeditiously due to prehospital stroke severity assessments that enable EMS bypass protocols and Thrombectomy-Capable Centers that minimize EMS bypass travel times. Although MT has proven efficacy, IVT remains an important treatment for LVO, especially in drip-and-ship models. In addition to acute therapies, this chapter highlights common stroke syndrome presentations and outcomes, landmark clinical trials, neuroimaging modalities, and future directions.
