Resumen
Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, which Descartes described as the seat of the soul. Melatonin levels fall gradually over the life-span. Melatonin is a free radical scavenger. Supplementation of the diet of paramecia with melatonin increases both mean and maximal clonal life-spans. Melatonin is related to suppressed immunocompetence. The precise role of melatonin in the aging process remains to be determined.
