In fiscal year 2013, value-based purchasing will be implemented. A portion of Medicare payments for hospital stays will be determined by performance and comparison with other facilities. Reimbursement will be at risk as the threshold is adjusted upward. Providers must strive to improve patient satisfaction and quality measures to remain competitive, ensure eligibility for pay incentives, and maintain (if applicable) Magnet status. This article describes a relationship-based care model for addressing patient satisfaction. In these difficult financial times, the implementation strategies for a practice model must have a minimal impact financially. This approach facilitates change within teams and cultures.
