Abstract

Ultrasound has several advantages over fluoroscopy which include the ability to visualize superficial cervical structures, avoid critical blood vessels, and visualize nerves. Ultrasound may be used to facilitate needle placement and can be combined with fluoroscopy to confirm contrast patterns. This can improve speed, safety, and the accuracy of an injection while decreasing radiation exposure. The main limitation of ultrasound is its inability to image through bone, which is why most spinal injections are performed with fluoroscopic guidance. It should be noted that these are more advanced injections and should be performed after sufficient practice and supervision.
