Abstract

The renal effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are reviewed with special emphasis on the clinical, pathophysiologic, and risk factors for acute renal failure. Renal papillary necrosis and chronic renal insufficiency can occur with the prolonged use of these drugs, although the prevalence of this manifestation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug nephrotoxicity is unknown. Current recommendations based on a critical literature survey are provided, along with e list of suggested areas in which more research is needed.
