Abstract
Benzodiazepines are among the most widely used drugs. Recent information about their various pharmacological properties, discussed here, provides a more rational basis for choice of efficacious, safe drugs within the category. In addition to their own use in anxiety states, they are useful in a variety of nonpsychiatric situations, including preanesthesia, seizure control, postmyocardial infarction care, and psychophysiologic disorders.
