Rapid gas chromatographie assay for volatile anesthetics in blood

Abstract

An equilibration/direct injection gas Chromatographie method has been developed for measurement of enflurane and halothane in whole blood. The method does not require extraction of anesthetic from blood or the use of pre-column devices for preparation of the sample for application to the gas Chromatograph column. By using an "anaerobic" serum vial unit, 1 ml, standards and samples are prepared, equilibrated at 37°C and 10 μl samples of the gas phase injected into the gas Chromatograph. Technical simplicity and reproducibility permit use of this assay under a variety of online conditions.
