Abstract

Doctoral psychology training provides a solid foundation for clinical practice, teaching, and research careers. Yet psychologists transitioning into formal leadership roles in organizations may not have been exposed to leadership development training. This chapter is dedicated to helping psychologists glean knowledge from foundational leadership theories for application to their own settings. Unique challenges faced by psychologists in leadership roles are discussed, including ethical concerns and diversity considerations, which add further complexity and richness to leadership roles. Practical applications for and calls to action by psychology leaders are discussed for clinical practice, research, advocacy, and education.
