Abstract

Cardiac lesions involving the endocardium, myocardium, pericardium and coronary vessels are well described in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) both in clinical and necropsy studies. 1-4 However, all these studies have evaluated patients with long-standing disease (mean duration 3 to 8 years).1-3 Information on cardiac involvement early in the course of the disease is lacking. We studied 18 unselected consecutive patients recently diagnosed as having SLE for the presence of cardiac abnormalities by echocardiography.
