Abstract
• Initial management of asthma includes assignment of severity category, identification of asthma "triggers," and development of a treatment plan based on degree of severity. • Inhaled corticosteroids are the medication of choice for treatment of persistent asthma (evidence level A). • Environmental control is an important component of asthma management. • Patient education, including how to use a written asthma action plan, is critical in managing asthma (evidence level A).
