Abstract

Some 30% of patients with cirrhosis die in hepatic coma. The clinical pattern is well defined, and the pathophysiology of interactions between liver and brain has been extensively investigated. The challenge now remains to characterize normal brain function. New imaging techniques carry the promise of dramatic breakthroughs.
