Abstract
Opium and its derivatives have been described and used for analgesia for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest medicinal plants. Many pain modulating systems are found in the human body; the most widely studied is that of the endogenous opioid system. This chapter synthesizes the available evidence regarding the use of opioids in the treatment of acute pain and chronic pain. Also, this chapter investigates proper monitoring of patients for abuse, misuse, and addiction with prescribed chronic opioid therapy.
