Abstract
While lesions at the tail of the pancreas may be benign or malignant, they often require resection. When performing a distal pancreatectomy, one can preserve the spleen or perform a combined distal pancreatectomy/spleenectomy. Preservation of the spleen is more technically challenging. One common complication is leak from the transected pancreatic duct. This chapter discusses an open distal pancreatectomy.
