Abstract

The psychiatrist, in concert with the primary care clinician, can play an important role in enhancing the quality of life for the adolescent with chronic illness by providing practical, developmentally appropriate, individualized and compassionate mental health services. Special attention to the process of adolescence and the family structure are required for successful management. Transition to adult mental health services should be planned carefully and coordinated with the primary care clinician.
