Abstract

We report the case of a 3-day-old infant who presented with a massive pericardial effusion. Pericardiocentesis, instillation of carbon dioxide into the pericardial sac, and angiography demonstrated displacement of the heart by an intrapericardial mass which proved at surgery to be the left lobe of the liver. The radiologic manifestation that strongly suggested herniation of a visceral organ into the pericardial sac (i.e., enlargement of the mass during inspiration) is discussed.
