This volume records the symposium on Foetal and Neonatal Physiology held at Cambridge from 25 to 27 July 1972 to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sir Joseph Barcroft (26 July 1872). It deals in a comprehensive way with the physiology of the foetus and the new born animal. Many leading scientists from all parts of the world took part in the symposium. Particular attention was paid in the organisation of the symposium to those areas where the present state of knowledge was lively and changing, so that the published volume would serve both as an account of the 'present state of the art' and also as a stimulus to further work. The volume is divided into sections reflecting the various sessions as follows: central nervous system, circulation and breathing, placental function, metabolism, endocrinology, parturition, and surfactant colloquium.
