Abstract

A previous study showed that the mineral phase imparts the stiffness to bone, whereas the collagen network contributes to its toughness. A research was carried out to determine the effects of such changes in the collagen network on its mechanical integrity. Demineralized bone specimens which were pretreated by heating at 70°C were tested. It was observed that heating induced denaturation of collagen molecules shows impacts on all mechanical properties measured.
