Abstract

Lessons learned during military conflicts caring for victims of combat injury have translated to advancements in the care of civilian patients for millennia. The most recent worldwide conflict is no exception, and surgical care specifically has seen some of the greatest evolution. Prior dogma has been examined and debunked in several instances, surgical care paradigms once relegated to history have been resurrected, and modern civilian trauma systems have been applied in combat environments for the first time which have then yielded new knowledge to further improve care for injured patients back in the civilian setting.
