Abstract

Biomarkers are objective measures of a physiological process, a pathological condition, or a biological response to a therapeutic intervention. Valuable biomarkers have been defined for use in clinical practice, especially in cancer and cardiology. Despite many efforts with an overwhelming number of publications, biomarkers in psychiatry are yet to be validated. Collaborative efforts toward biological-based definitions of psychiatric disorders and adequately powered, longitudinal, and multimodal studies will potentially lead to clinically relevant biomarkers.
