Abstract
Much is still unknown related to the basic science of articular cartilage healing. This article discusses some of theses issues and also experimental studies attempting to enhance cartilage regeneration. Special emphasis is placed on new methods used for the synthesis of articular cartilage ex vivo, in conjunction with bioreactors, which are used to modulate the mechanical environment of cell seeded scaffolds. Also promising are efforts related to the design and use of biodegradable scaffolds that can be used to tissue engineer articular cartilage. The author's thoughts on potential future improvements are also presented.
