Animal study on selective stimulation of nerve fibers using biphasic rectangular pulses

Abstract

Based on the F-H model, a simulation system for studying the excitation properties of myelinated nerve fibers had been built. For the purpose of decreasing electrochemical damage, three selective stimulation methods by use of biphasic rectangular pulses were performed on this model. They are single-electrode, bipolar electrode and triple-electrode method. The simulation results proved that they are all effective. And the feasibility of the methods was verified by animal experiments on the nerve trunks of toads. The largest peak's amplitude and delay of compound active potential and the results of collision experiments proved that the methods are valid.
