Abstract
Many patients presenting to a primary care physician have a family member with an alcohol abuse problem. Family members are both affected by the disease and often behave in ways that can contribute to the progression of the problem in the alcohol abuser. A physician who is alert to the family 'red flags' and who can screen for family alcohol abuse, can facilitate healthier life styles for all family members.
